THE SOLUTION TO YOUR
COMPUTER CONVERSION PROBLEMS
Upgrading your system to take advantage of the
latest improvements in computer hardware and software is frequently desirable, often
necessary. But the price of change can be a costly, time-consuming, and complicated
rewrite or conversion involving numerous unfamiliar activities. Even in the best
circumstances, migration
means that a large volume of materials (jcl, procedure, program, transaction,
screen, copy, include, database, file, record description, report, listing, documentation,
etc) must be collected, cataloged, and controlled. Hundreds, even thousands, of programs
runs must be planned, coordinated, and performed over and above
your normal production workload.
Often unforeseen during budgeting, however, are the numerous hidden costs
of migration. For example, severe operational overhead can significantly paralyze ongoing
production work. If migration
takes longer than planned -as it frequently does- the cost of extended parallel
operation of computers can approach the budget for the entire project. The pressures
resulting from these additional costs can make deadlines unachievable and
severely damage staff morale, further contributing to the migration
problem.
Since 1993 Computer System Services CSS has developed an industrial approach to
system conversion which avoids many of the disadvantages of conventional
conversion, achieves many of the benefits of a custom rewrite, and can save you
time, money, and manpower. This unique approach, called XMS (Transformation Management
System), uses an extensive library of specialized software (analyzers,
generators, translators) and advanced programming and testing
methods (quality measurement, source compare, database and file comparison tools).
CSS carefully manages these elements at every stage of the migration process.
An experienced migration project manager works closely with you and
coordinates the project. Guided by the project managers, technical team leaders supervise
the migration
programmers. Our staff is skilled in organizing the migration and in anticipating and
solving its problems. This organization enables us to meet schedules
at a fixed price.
XMS has many advantages over conventional
conversion. Whereas conversions frequently exceed their budgets and schedules,
XMS reduces
this risk. The transformation process not only accurately preserves all
your application functions, but can also shorten the time needed to make your programs
operational in your new environment. For every test, XMS compares the output
of the transformed program with the converted output of
the original program and flags any mismatches for the correction. We make
sure that the migrated programs will produce output functionally
equivalent to that produced by the original programs. |
AN INDUSTRIAL APPROACH TO MIGRATION ISSUES
XMS has been developed, refined, and used
successfully in our migration
contracts involving only a few programs to those involving thousands of programs for
business, industry, and government. We have completed million-dollar contracts for a
number of the leading French companies. Our experience
includes most of the hardware produced by the major computer manufacturers, most of the programming
languages and many data base management and communications
systems including IBM, MVS, VM, VSE, AS400, AIX, BULL, GCOS, ICL, UNIX,
COBOL, PL1, PLI, CPL1, ASSEMBLY, FORTRAN, RPG, GAP, GMAP, SAS, NATURAL, ADL, IDEAL, AIDA,
TELON, PACBASE, ARIANE, GENEROL, RAMIS, FOCUS, NOMAD, REXX, EASYTREVE, SYSIF, IMS/DB, DL1,
IDS2, IDMS, IDMS/R, DDS, SQL, DB2, PROTEE, QMF, ADABAS, DATACOM, SYSBASE, ORACLE,
CA-UNIVERS, IMS/DC, IDMS/DC, DM4TP, TDS, TP8, TCAM, CICS, CA-SCHEDULER, CONTROL-M, OPC,
PSS, etc. Because of its flexibility, XMS can also accommodate hardware/software
combinations not listed including newly developed ones.
XMS offers an integrated approach to convert
existing systems to new environments. The transformation process helps to achieve the
needed changes in programming languages, program structures,
operating systems, data communications and data management, while preserving processing
logic. XMS
can pay for itself in savings from the reduction of parallel operation, the avoidance of
redundant implementation effort, and the ease of maintaining the transformed
programs.Unlike conventional conversion, XMS has the capability of restructuring and,
where necessary, rewriting your existing programs in the way most effective for your new
hardware and software configuration. The process combines the speed of automatic
translation with many of the operational advantages of a custom rewrite. It
preserves past accomplishments and adapts old systems to new computer environments.
Since system migration involves many activities, including study,
planning, data preparation, conversion, migration, testing, and implementation, a
migration project is usually time-consuming and complicated. Transformation Management
System's standards and procedures ensure the accuracy of each step and avoid costly rework
and unnecessary processing. The result is higher productivity and quality. XMS also
reduces the use of your production resources in the project. Using special
software and management techniques, it decreases the time needed for SCHEDULER,
JCL, PROGRAM, SCREEN, REPORT, FILE and DATABASE
conversion. The emphasis on thorough unit testing often reduces costly
system and parallel testing time. |
